Trading MTNs involves the transfer of the ownership of debt securities from one entity to another in exchange for other securities or funds. Medium term notes are trading worldwide from a variety of brokers, middlemen, banks and companies. Most stocks, in contrast to medium term notes, are traded on exchanges. MTNs have platforms where buyers and sellers meet and decide on a price.

Some securities exchanges have physical locations where transactions are carried out on a trading floor where people buy and sell bonds, notes, stocks, etc. In contract to physical trading there are also virtual exchanges where securities, including MTNs are traded electronically.
